Objective
Be the first to reach 121 points, scored through pegging (during play) and the show (counting hands afterward).
The Deal
Each hand, both players are dealt 6 cards and discard 2 to the crib, which belongs to the dealer. The non-dealer cuts the starter card; if it's a Jack, the dealer immediately scores 2 ("his heels").
Pegging
- Players alternate playing one card at a time face up, keeping a running count that cannot exceed 31.
- Reaching exactly 15 scores 2 points; reaching exactly 31 scores 2 points.
- Playing a card matching the rank of the card just played scores 2 (pairs), 6 (three in a row), or 12 (four in a row).
- Playing a card that completes a run of 3 or more consecutive ranks (in any order) scores points equal to the run's length.
- If you can't play without exceeding 31, say "Go" — your opponent scores 1 point (2 if they reach exactly 31) and the count resets to continue with any remaining cards.
The Show
After pegging, hands are counted in order: non-dealer, then dealer, then the dealer's crib — each combined with the starter card. Points come from fifteens (any combination totaling 15, worth 2 each), pairs (2 each), runs of 3+ (worth their length, doubled for any duplicate rank), a flush (4 if all 4 hand cards match suit, 5 if the starter matches too), and "his nobs" (1 point for a Jack matching the starter's suit).
